About Pepto-Bismol for Dogs
Pepto-Bismol (generic name: Bismuth Subsalicylate) is an over-the-counter medication in the Gastrointestinal category. It is commonly used for dogs to treat:
- Diarrhea
- Upset stomach
- Mild vomiting
- Gas
Dosing Notes
1 ml per 10 lbs OR 1 teaspoon per 20 lbs of body weight.
Warnings & Contraindications
Warnings
- May cause black/dark stools — this is normal and not a cause for concern
- Contains salicylate (aspirin-like compound)
Do NOT Use If
- NOT recommended for cats — salicylate toxicity risk
- Do not give with NSAIDs or aspirin
- Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals
Important Notes

- Discontinue if vomiting worsens or persists beyond 24 hours
